Matthew 13:31-32

31 He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’

BLOG DISCUSSION QUESTION: THIS IS THE SECOND OF THREE TIMES THAT JESUS TELLS THIS PARABLE. NOTICE THAT IN THIS TELLING THE BIRDS OF THE AIR MAKE NESTS IN ITS BRANCHES. WHAT POINT DO YOU THINK JESUS IS TRYING TO EMPHASIZE IN THIS TELLING OF THE MUSTARD SEED PARABLE?

Maybe it is telling us that we all have a home in God's family. We build our home with faith, and because of that faith, we all are united in one tree. No matter if you are a crow or a blue jay, or a sparrow. God has a place for us and all our welcome in His mustard tree.

laymen...good point. I had not thought of it that way before.

Additionally, Jesus might be telling us that not only is the reign of God able to shelter us from the heat, it is also strong enough to hold us when storms come...or strong enough for us to rest in to hold us above the things that prowl with an appetite to devour us. I have always thought of this telling to deal with the strength of God's reign......but I like laymen's comments....maybe I'll have to change my thinking on this!
