Mark 4:30-32

30 He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’

Is other shade shadier? By the fact that we tend to gather under other shade.....money, jobs, family.... instead of the shade of God's reign, it seems to me that if we don't think other shade is shadier, at least we see it as more attractive. It isn't that these other shades are necessarily bad. They can provide shade from the hot sun of life...the pressures, the guilt, the failures...but as good as shade as they might be, they are fragile shade. Jesus says in this parable, that God's reign in our lives is one that we can count on to be strong enough and vast enough to shade us, unlike anything else. It may seem to start out so small that it could never give us the shade that we need when things get hot, but Jesus gives us this promise....it will be big enough to give us the shade that we need, unlike anything else.
