Genesis 1:1-4
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

"in the beginning".... often times, kids ask me, "when was God created?" As I have thought about that, "when" is a question that deals with time. Here in the first verse of the Bible, we discover that time was also part of God's creation...."in the beginning"...."beginning" is a word that deals with time. To think outside of time is a difficult thing for us to do as we are people of time. Yet, clearly the Bible indicates that God, who created time, is outside of time, and there for the word "When" doesn't apply to God's existence. I usually respond that God has always been and will always be. How can that be? The answer: God is outside of time, and that allowed God to create time.
Pastor, Good answer for the kids. A follow up could be that when God created the heavens and the earth he and saw that it was formless(chaotic) he created time as a beginning to a structured world for all the new life that he would create.
As for the use of the words void, formless, darkness, night, light & day, much can be learned from these. A study of the ancient hebrew language defines much more than just visual/physical objects for these words. Void & formless = empty & chaotic, Light = knowledge and darkness = evil. There was a reason the day is called light while the night is called darkness. There is also a reason why he only calls the light good. This has significant meaning going down the road and understanding where this all fits in, in the world today as it relates to these 1st days of creation.
