June 1

2 Sam. 5:1-5
Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, ‘Look, we are your bone and flesh. 2For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The Lord said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel.’ 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. 4David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for forty years. 5At Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah for thirty-three years.

Blog Discussion Question: Does the age of David’s reign sound familiar….mmmm?.....quoting from "Ferris Beuler's Day Off"....."Anyone...anyone...?"

Are you referring to the approximate age of Jesus when he started his public ministry?????

The readings in the last couple weeks have been very confusing to me...do others agree?
I thought Saul was dead....and yet it keeps mentioning Saul????????Pastor Jerry, get us "out of this dense woods", OK?

Yes....30 years old is when Luke tells us that Jesus began his public ministry. Remember, Jesus is proclaimed by the angels to be the messiah....the anointed one...the one who fulfilled the promise given to David that one of his descendents would reign over God's people forever....the Messiah(Hebrew)....Christ (Greek). Clearly, Luke wants us to see yet another connection between Jesus and David...both 30 years old when they took the throne of God's people.

In answer to Praise....yes...Saul has died, but his generals and David's generals continued to fight....and when Saul's son's head was brought to David, it was as good as Saul, himself, being slayed.
