2 Sam. 2:8-11

8 But Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim. 9He made him king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and over all Israel. 10Ishbaal, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned for two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Blog Discussion Question: Is there something about the name of David’s rival king that strikes you odd?

notice...the end of his name...IshBAAL. Biblical names almost always meant something, and names that had the letters "Ja" in them were always linking themselves with Jahweh (or what we used to call Jehovah) for example....Elijah...which I think means "Jahweh is God". But David's rival's name doesn't have "ja" it has "baal"....a god who was considered a pagan god...a god with whom Elijah did battle . It seems odd that someone who bears the name of a false god should become ruler over 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel. Something surely had gone amuck!
