Tues. Apr. 20

1 Sam. 19:18-24
18 Now David fled and escaped; he came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. He and Samuel went and settled at Naioth. 19Saul was told, ‘David is at Naioth in Ramah.’ 20Then Saul sent messengers to take David. When they saw the company of the prophets in a frenzy, with Samuel standing in charge of them, the spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also fell into a prophetic frenzy. 21When Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they also fell into a frenzy. Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also fell into a frenzy. 22Then he himself went to Ramah. He came to the great well that is in Secu; he asked, ‘Where are Samuel and David?’ And someone said, ‘They are at Naioth in Ramah.’ 23He went there, towards Naioth in Ramah; and the spirit of God came upon him. As he was going, he fell into a prophetic frenzy, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24He too stripped off his clothes, and he too fell into a frenzy before Samuel. He lay naked all that day and all that night. Therefore it is said, ‘Is Saul also among the prophets?’

BLOG DISCUSSION QUESTION: Sounds like the people found Saul's prophetic frenzy confusing.

I find it a little confusing myself! What do they mean by 'frenzy'. In the NIV version of the scriptures it states 'prophesied' instead. In the notes of my Bible it states that Saul was actually so overwelmed with the Spirit of God that he was not able to fulfill his own intentions to take David's life. Don't worry Pastor J, I have been reading the blogs everyday, but don't always know what to blog about :)!! Hope everyone has a great day!

You know, this is very confusing! I agree with KevKat. The helps in the Harper Collins Study Bible refers back to 1 Sam 10:5 and 10:11. But even after reading and rereading those remarks it's certainly not very clear.
The prophetic part, my bible calls it that also, is difficult. However, the statement, 'Is Saul also among the prophets?', also is questioning. I'll include here the note from my information. "Because of the tradition of prophetic antagonism to Saul, the saying may have originated as a way of remarking on a group that has absorbed accepted the least likely candidate for membership.'

What is quite confusing to me is that first Samuel, who truly is a man of God, is in the midst of those that are in a 'prophetic frenzy' and everyone who saw them also went into this same frenzy. But then it says, 'the spirit of God came upon him', Saul, and he to fell into a frenzy. By the way a frenzy was singing, playing instruments, dancing, group trances, and sometime even self mutilation.
Sounds like something I would want to do!

In answer to your question PJ, it sounds like they and all of us are quite confused about what this is. It will be interesting to hear what you think we should learn from this!

oops, maybe one more thing, the message we need to hear could be...don't go into a "frenzy" under any circumstances! Smile, the Bible is not always so serious you know. After all even Jesus was the life of the party at the wedding, especially after he made all the wine. I may start drinking wine after all!

What a sad time. This is Sauls finale. The Holy Ghost is powerful in Samuel. Everyone around get to have the celectation of the Holy Ghost presence. Saul with the Holy Ghost disrobes his royalty. He is officialy done. The last writing of Gods presence in Saul. How sad.

I just read gabriels comment. With Samuel as leader, the frenzy was Sauls messengers being stoped by Gods presents not to capture David and also Him to disrobe Saul. Thyis happened in the same place where Saul first met Samuel. Also remember the fear of the Lord is the beginning if wisdom.

Sounds like there was quite a bit of rather revealing dancing going on....no wonder it was a bit confusing. What does one make of a king who falls into such a frenzy. Certainly not the dignified, regal, and mighty action of a one who is looked upon as a king. Prophets, not kings, were noted for their eccentric behavior...remember Jeremiah who came much later.

When the powerful are rendered powerless unusual things happen, for one, we see how powerless they really are.
