Saturday April 3

Lk 6:47-49
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.’

BLOG DISCUSSION QUESTION: What do you suppose those first disciples thought if they recalled this parable on the Saturday before Easter.

The disciples may have felt some shaky foundations as they saw the events unfold before Easter morning.

They may have been feeling the "bad news" part of Psalm 23:4. The were going through the valley of the SHADOW OF DEATH. Soon however they will experience the "good news" (gospel) of the same verse. They were GOING THROUGH the valley of the shadow of death,

Jesus promises not to leave us in the valley, but promises us to lead us through.

These 40 days in the parables of Jesus have been a great opportunity to: Come to Jesus, Hear His words, and also act on them. My foundation is stronger. Thank you.

This parable has nothing to do with Easter morning. It represents our religious desision to build our foundation on obedience to Gods word, repentance,His saving grace, His mercy. Trusting in Him. The flood represents divine judgement. One builds on the rock. One has another religion and doesnt hear.

If the disciples did think about the parables, which I believe could have been preparing them for the "bad news" part of the Easter story, they would have to be thinking, "Which foundation have I built?". I know I am thankful for my great grandparents and grandparents decision to build strong foundations of faith that I now see taking hold in my children. (which makes me think of Deut. 11:19-20) When thinking of the disciples when Christ was "dead" they had to question all he had told them and may have thought of this parable that first Easter.

If I would have been one of the disciples I would agree with sower that I would have been thinking of which foundation have I built my house on? It would be interesting to know how Peter felt as PJ called one of the strong disciples (but still had his fault at the last supper) the other night and then also where Judas felt he stood as one of the weakest disciples. Most of the disciples probably thought their homes were not on a firm foundation but rather a sandy soil (as another version of the Bible calls it). Little do they know what will come on Easter morning as most of them find themselves now on a firm foundation thanks to Jesus Christ who ROSE with VICTORY! Ok so I got ahead of myself for tomorrow!! :)

Perhaps the disciples felt like it was their fault that "the house" fell because they had failed to pay attention to His teachings the day before. i.e. ...the denying, falling asleep, etc....the disciples must've felt that if they had acted differently, Christ would still be alive.....

Of course none of us knows for sure how they felt, but my guess is that they must have been wondering if Jesus was as "rock solid" as they had thought....wasn't it Peter who said, "Lord, we have given up everything to follow you." They had built their house on Jesus, and now they have just witnessed Jesus die on the cross.

It is no wonder that we find ourselves sometimes wondering if Jesus is the "rock" that we have hoped he would be...

....guess we'll find out tomorrow...as the disciples did...who is even stronger than a rock!
